Thursday afternoon, July 18! Jail corner in Narsingdi city! Police are engaged in a heated exchange of fire with protesters demanding quota reform. Bricks and mortars are being thrown and gunfire is being fired. Tahmid Bhuiyan Tamim (15), a ninth-grade student, died on the spot after being hit by a rubber bullet. The protesters were chanting slogans while his body was being carried on a stretcher. At that time, the police opened fire again. The bullet also hit Tahmid's body.
Standing about 100 yards away, Tahmid's father Rafiqul Islam Bhuiyan watched the scene helplessly. Several students who were among the protesters and went to the hospital for treatment that day after being shot, also gave the same description to this Prothom Alo correspondent of the bullets hitting the bodies again.
The deceased, Tahmid, was a student of Nasima Qadir Molla High School and Homes. Tahmid was the eldest of three children of a rural doctor father and a housewife mother. Tahmid has two sisters, aged 13 and 3.Tahmid's house is 300 yards away from the incident site (Zelakhana intersection), in Nandipara village of Chinishpur union in Sadar upazila. When Tahmid went to his house last Tuesday, he saw a stretcher lying in the yard. The stretcher belongs to the 100-bed Narsingdi District Hospital, relatives said. They said that Tahmid's body was brought home on that stretcher last Thursday (July 18) afternoon. Due to the situation, it has not been returned yet. Tahmid's father has been in shock since that day.
