July Uprising: Enam Faces Vision Loss, Memory Fading

Enam Siddique, a resident of Uttara, Dhaka, is on the verge of losing his eyesight and memory after sustaining a severe head injury during an anti-discrimination student protest. Since August 5, he has also lost his job and is unable to afford advanced medical treatment. His family has appealed to the government for assistance.

While Enam can still see with his left eye, his right eye has completely lost vision.

A Protest Turns into Tragedy

In late July, like other parts of the capital, the student protests in Uttara reached their peak. Many lost their lives, some were left disabled, and others sustained grave injuries, including Enam Siddique.

On August 4, the protests in Uttara's Rajlaxmi area turned violent. Enam was caught in the crossfire between student protesters, ruling party activists, and law enforcement. He sustained a severe head injury. Initially dismissing it as minor, his condition worsened in the following days.

In early November, Enam’s health deteriorated significantly. Suffering from intense headaches, he sought treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences. After multiple tests, doctors diagnosed a stroke caused by the head trauma.

Fighting for Survival

Enam describes his ordeal:
"My limbs were in terrible condition. I could barely walk. I went to the doctor, but I didn’t realize things would get this bad. Now, it feels like something is lodged in my head."

Despite several visits to the hospital—seven or eight times, according to his family—Enam’s condition shows little improvement. The family claims they are not receiving adequate care, even though the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has reached out.

Enam’s wife, Ishrat Jahan, paints a bleak picture:
"His left eye works, but he can’t see with his right eye anymore. Day by day, his memory is also fading."

A Plea for Help

The family has already spent a significant amount on treatment, exhausting their savings. Ishrat Jahan appeals to the government for support to ensure Enam’s recovery and return to work.

Enam, previously employed at a buying house in Uttara, lost his job after August 5. Now, the couple hopes for government assistance to afford the advanced treatment Enam urgently needs.
